Library Happenings

Hello Again!  Things have been very busy in the library this fall, hence the time from when I last posted.  Students have been very busy learning about Fiction, Nonfiction, Genres, Reference Books, and Research.  One of our most interesting studies was last week with the fifth graders.  We researched and discussed the history of Halloween and where our modern Halloween traditions come from.  A major point of discussion was to understand and be able to articulate why some people choose NOT to celebrate Halloween.  As a whole, we came to a better understanding of both sides of the issue AND learned to celebrate our differences, value others' opinions, and not to alienate others because of their beliefs.  Our second graders recently made Story Stew.  They thoroughly enjoyed mixing the ingredients of a fiction story together to see how an author creates his/her story.  These ingredients include: characters, setting, problem and solution.  Books are flying off the shelves, the iPad cart is being utilized by classrooms and we just received a subscription to Big Universe from the Cleveland City Schools.  This is a great website where students can write, illustrate and publish their own stories, as well as, read other students' stories.  So many great things happening this fall.  See you in the Library!

Moving Right Along...

Things are moving right along in the library.  Students are learning how to find their own books in the online catalog and the shelves.  They are doing a great job at it.  We are creating a schedule so that all students can check out books during art weeks, and they are excited about that!  Our younger friends are learning all about books...the parts of a book, the author and illustrator, how to care for books, and the difference between fiction and nonfiction.  Looking forward to another great week of classes...there is always more to learn in the Library Media Center.  See you in the library!

An Exciting Week!

This week ALL students learned how to use the iPads.  They truly enjoyed learning how to use them and exploring several great apps.  I am very proud of our students here at Blythe Bower for how they took great care when they used them.  What a great blessing to our school!  To have an iPad cart housed in the library that teachers can utilize whenever they wish.
We also got to check out books for the first time this year.  The students were so excited.  The best part is when they would see me in the hallway the next day and they would tell me that they had read their books.  It is a great day when a kid is excited about reading!  Let's keep up the excitement!  See you in the Library!

Well, we are back to school and enjoying the library again.  New Kindergarten students have been learning about the library and what we do here.  1st through 5th grades are happily returning and reviewing library rules and procedures.  I love to see their excited faces when they enter and they are ready to get to reading. Check out will begin the week of Aug. 26.  We have been creating bookmarks and stories while waiting in great anticipation for check out to begin.  It is wonderful to have our halls and classrooms full once again.  Looking forward to a great year...see you in the library!
